BOOKS FROM BIRTH: DC PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM

Books from Birth 6

A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

The DC Public Library’s Sing, Talk, and Read (S.T.A.R.) program approached Taoti to help foster lifelong reading habits among young children. The initiative called, “Books From Birth”, gifts children a free book each month until their fifth birthday. Spearheaded by Dolly Parton in 1995 in Tennessee, the project has grown nationally and internationally.

Research shows that conversations, gestures, and interactions between parents/caregivers and children from birth build a foundation for learning. Washington, D.C. families lacked access to books or the skills needed to help children develop into strong readers.

Taoti helped change that, one book at a time.

BOOKS FROM BIRTH

The Best Literacy Program No One Had Heard of

We kicked off the project with a workshop that included all stakeholders to quickly gain a deep understanding of the brand, its requirements, and desires.  These insights inspired our design team to develop a colorful visual identity that evokes the themes around early literacy and captures the joy of reading.

Positioned for Success

Working against a tight deadline, our team designed more than 45 digital and print assets within three months that were implemented across the city and displayed in all library locations. It was critical that the materials were inclusive of all children in DC. Finally, we ensured that the materials were accessibility-friendly and translated into Spanish, Amharic (the language of Ethiopia), and Chinese.

Writing the Next Chapter on Literacy

New brand elements include a custom logo, flyers, and digital assets promoting the free program to parents and caregivers. The DC Public Library System came to us to drive engagement in the program, and we delivered.
