The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) serves its community by providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy. That’s only part of its story. Through partnerships with New York State Parks and public and private partners, LIPA operates a state-of-the-art nature center for visitors to learn about the connection between energy systems and ecosystems. There, they engage with the public about transitioning to a clean, low-carbon energy future. LIPA needed a website with serious bells and whistles to help visitors find information quickly and to also inspire them to want to be part of their mission.

Vision & Voice

We kicked off the project with an alignment meeting to understand LIPA’s goals and aspirations. This was followed by landscape analysis, stakeholder research, content, analytics, and technical audits of the current site to develop a shared vision for the new website and identify its specific needs. The aim was to ensure the new site supported LIPA’s goals.

This phase involved the development of the new Information Architecture (IA) and the sketching of wireframes, with best practices for accessibility and user experience at the center of each step. We led creative brainstorms and used mood boards to develop design mockups. We developed a style guide to ensure consistency across the site.

Our experienced team of developers brought the vision and structure for LIPA’s new digital presence to life. Key features such as improved search, a dynamic document library, and SEO solutions were integrated, and steps were taken to ensure the focus on accessibility was never lost.

Generating Better Results

Our team recommended WordPress for the LIPA website. The immersive design creates a powerful visual impact, attracting visitors from around the world and making them feel as if they are on the shoreline or attending a conservation class at the visitor’s center. We integrated widgets that allow visitors to customize accessibility and cookie preferences, and we optimized for SEO, bandwidth, and page-loading time, all seamlessly improving the end-user experience and ensuring LIPA’s content has maximum reach. And, by creating a new brand and style guide, we expanded the opportunity to extend their vision in the future through their marketing materials and when additions need to be made to LIPA’s website.

With LIPA’s newly raised profile, its website serves as a powerful reminder of its vital environmental education work—transitioning to cleaner energy sources to protect our planet for future generations.
